Travel Insurance

A good travel insurance policy includes trip cancellation, baggage loss, accident, sickness and sometimes medical evacuation. Special attention should also be given to coverage in the event that your airline folds.

Coverage isn’t necessary for all types of travel but you should definitely consider it for longer, more expensive trips. Furthermore, if you do not have the financial resources to purchase your trip a second time, ensure that you are adequately covered. You should aim to cover the cost of anything and everything that is not reimbursable.

Here are some tips about travel insurance:

  1. Always purchase your policy from a third party rather than a travel agent. It may be cheaper and there is less risk of insurance company insolvency.
  2. Third party insurance will provide broader coverage, including protection from the travel agency’s own cancellation fees.
  3. “Pre-existing conditions are not covered by travel insurance.
  4. Events that should have been anticipated are not covered by these policies.

Compare policies and choose what’s best for you. Remember that the onus is on the traveler to know exactly what is covered by the policy. Don’t wait until something happens to find out that your policy doesn’t provide the necessary coverage.

Understand how to file an insurance claim. Most policies require that you to notify the insurance company as soon as possible and before you incur costs that you will later be seeking reimbursement.
